In our daily lives, countless people strive to find happiness. It seems to be the most desired goal, yet the very act of chasing happiness often leads to more distress and anxiety, as it always seems just out of reach.
In Pali, the ancient language spoken during the Buddha’s time, there is a profound word: Santussako. It translates to being ‘content’ and ‘satisfied’ with the present moment. When we cease our endless craving for happiness, we begin to embody it. This perspective offers a powerful insight: the opposite of our constant yearning for happiness can be the key to true contentment.
The cultivation of contentment is a practice deeply rooted in living mindfully in the present moment, with awareness, gratitude, and compassion. When we commit to moderate living, we learn to accept all aspects of life—the good and the bad, the hot and the cold, the beautiful and the ugly. With Santussako, true happiness becomes attainable. It leads us towards peace, liberation, and ultimately, enlightenment.
Inspired by this profound understanding, Bhante Indarathana founded the Santussako International Foundation as a non-profit charitable organization to bring the practice of contentment into the lives of many. Santussako Hermitage was established in 2020 to realize this vision. Our aim is to help everyone find peace and a fulfilling life by embracing the wisdom of Santussako in their daily lives.
We humbly invite you to support and contribute towards this meritorious and noble mission to build a monastery for the Maha sangha and spiritual sanctuary for Dhamma practitioners from all over the world in support of their spiritual cultivation as well as pave the way for the dispensation of the sublime Buddha-Dhamma to be sustained and prolonged in the world.
