null

Santussako Hermitage is a Theravada Buddhist monastery and international mindfulness retreat center nestled within 3 acres of forested hills in Sri Lanka’s Kurunegala district. It offers a serene environment where individuals can deeply immerse themselves in the Buddha’s teachings, particularly focusing on cultivating mindfulness (sati) and compassion (karuna). The hermitage is designed to foster inner harmony and understanding, providing a supportive space for the practice of awareness and presence in daily life.

Mindfulness, a central tenet of the Buddha’s teachings, is at the heart of life at Santussako Hermitage. This practice encourages continuous awareness of the present moment, helping the mind to find peace amidst the distractions of modern life. Alongside mindfulness, the practice of compassion (karuna) is emphasised, promoting a deeper connection with others and fostering an environment of empathy and kindness. These practices together support personal and spiritual growth.

As a retreat from the stresses of contemporary life, Santussako Hermitage offers a sanctuary for reconnecting with nature and achieving inner peace. The tranquil surroundings, combined with disciplined mindfulness and compassion practices, create an ideal setting for transformative experiences. Visitors are guided on a journey of self-discovery, aligning with the Buddha’s teachings to cultivate a life of contentment and peace.

How It Started

null

Santussako Hermitage was humbly founded by Bhante Indarathana in 2020, a significant endeavor deeply inspired and guided by the Most Venerable B. Sri Saranankara Nayaka Maha Thero, the esteemed Spiritual Patron of the Hermitage. This sacred initiative began in 2018 with the generous donation of 3 acres of pristine land by Sudharma Menike and her family. This land, now the heart of Santussako Hermitage, offers a serene and natural setting that is ideally suited for meditation and contemplation, enhancing the spiritual journey for all who visit.

The establishment of Santussako Hermitage is a testament to the dedication of Bhante Indarathana and the unwavering support of the local and international Buddhist community. Particularly instrumental were the members and devotees of the Subang Jaya Buddhist Association, whose collective efforts have helped the Hermitage thrive. Today, Santussako Hermitage stands as a beacon of peace and enlightenment, continuing to grow and flourish, offering a place of tranquility and spiritual growth for all who seek it.
